I'm doing some research for my next Miss Clara Vale book, the one set in Berlin. There is a famous hotel vertically opposite the Brandenburg Gate, called the Hotel Adlon. The proprietor of the hotel, one Louis Adlon, was a fierce monarchist. He never got over the Kaiser being deposed and wouldn't accept that vehicles that didn't belong to the Kaiser were now allowed to drive through the Brandenburg Gate.So he would walk there - on the way to or from his hotel - without looking right or left, believing that no cars had the right to be there. Until, one day in 1918 he was hit by a car. He was seriously injured but recovered. However, a royalist rarely changes its spots, and so three years later - still refusing to accept that the Kaiser was gone - he walked his usual route through the Brandenburg Gate and was hit by another car - that shouldn't have been there!
